"I combine, manipulate and blend together elements, textures and features from dozens and dozens of real-life photos to come up with this vision of mine," says Väätäinen.
Disney has the magic touch to bring to life animated characters with their colourful costumes and bubbly personalities. It is easy for kids and adults alike to fall for the fantasy-like stories of good versus evil, all while belting out catchy songs. Jirka Väätäinen is not satisfied with the beloved characters being stuck in the world of animation. He wants them to feel as real as possible.
In the past, Väätäinen has envisioned what the Disney villains may look like in real life. His interpretations are so eerily real, it feels he is using actual models for his work. Now, Väätäinen wanted to give Disney villains a chance in the spotlight just in time for Halloween. The Finn digitally paints by hand using Photoshop. “I usually have a certain vision in my head of the character, and I start by thinking of and looking for people or real-life pictures that somehow remind me of the character I am working on,” he says.
