The country of Georgia has a legendary tragic love story that all Georgians know. The story was first told in the 1937 novel called Ali and Nino, and it tells the tale of a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian princess who are separated by the Bolshevik invasion. The story is a tragedy in the same vein as Romeo and Juliet: The Azerbaijani youth falls in love with the princess, but then dies defending his country. Georgia now has an iconic art installation to commemorate the famous tale brought to life by Tamara Kvesitadze.

Man and Woman stand nine metres tall and is made of steel. Kvesitadze describes the sculpture as, “a never-ending story of love and separation, of joy and of sadness, of pleasure and suffering.”

The statues are interactive: Every day at 7 pm, they move close to one another in a kiss against the sky over the Black Sea.

Kvesitadze likes to include movement in her creations, thus combining art and construction. Her fascination with movement stems from her interest in Greek philosophy, particularly the words of Heraclitus. “According to him, everything is in flux and one can never enter the same river twice, as it is in constant motion,” Kvesitadze explains. “Given that sculpture is not typically linked to movement, I became more and more interested in experimenting with this idea in my practice.”

The sculpture is erected in Batumi, the capital city of Georgia’s seaside Adjara Region. Man and Woman have been named among the world’s 10 most romantic statues and is a favourite spot among tourists.
