When I was pregnant with my first child, I was excited to be part of the sisterhood of mothers. In my mind, I pictured an environment filled with encouragement, support, and empathy from other moms. The reality, however, was not quite what I expected. Instead, I encountered many passionate opinions and assumptions based on everything from breastfeeding, being a working mom to what types of diapers and wipes I was using. It turned out every mom had an opinion.

Nothing is more disheartening and discouraging than encountering strong-willed, judgmental, and narrow-minded parents. The one thing that unites us is our love for our kids and unquestioning devotion to them. By the time I had my second child, I had found the empathy and encouragement I longed for from others. Whenever I see a stressed-out mom on the verge of tears, I smile and give her a look that says, “I have been in your shoes.”
