Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds received the Governor General’s Award on Friday, the nation’s top honour. The award recognizes individuals who have excelled in their areas of expertise. And to bring the message home, former Barenaked Ladies lead singer Steven Page sang an original song, “Canada Loves You Back,” for the Vancouver native. Captured in a split-screen; one half showing Reynold’s reaction and on the other, Page honouring the actor, philanthropist, and businessman.
“Of all the Canadian Ryans, you’ve gotta be in our top three,” Page belts out as the 45-year-old reacts with a chuckle. William Shatner, Vancouver Canucks players Stan Smyl, Henrik Sedin, and Daniel Sedin made cameos as did representatives from the many organizations Reynolds supports like Reconciliation Canada and Food Banks Canada.
The song ends with Chief Dr. Robert Joseph, an ambassador for Reconciliation Canada acknowledging the Deadpool star’s support. Overwhelmed with emotion, Reynolds wiped away tears saying, “I guess I’ve made it.”
He later tweeted “Last night, Canada honoured me with a Governor General's Award and this video. I'm not crying. It's just maple syrup." He also expressed his gratitude to Her Excellency, The Right Honourable Governor General Mary Simon for the award and his friend Page, who he dubs as an “absolute legend.”
